Doubts And Progress

With Christmas approaching Jewellery orders have started to increase.  This helps me towards buying much needed equipment but takes me away from the goal of working on my Sculpture.

So as has been the case for some time now I have been locked in a struggle between creativity and financial expediency.

I have a real tendency to overthink to the point of inaction.  I have been spending copious time planning and not doing.  What needs to happen is actual Sculpting, Moulding and Casting.  Even if the results betray my ambitions, I must just ‘do’.

Also I am becoming increasingly aware that I have one eye on the project and the other on commercial viability.  I think that to be successful one needs to just create whatever it is that feels ‘right.’ This quote from Rodin seems to resonate with me;

The main thing is to be moved, to love, to hope, to tremble, to live.” ~Auguste Rodin

With my first piece I want to start simple in order that the technical issues don’t overawe me.  So I’m going to start with a Bust. But because of the limitations of producing ‘movement’ in such a piece I’m looking at adding dynamism with hair.  I’m going to sculpt a character from stories I’ve written involving a Water Deity; this led me to research underwater photography of models, among them and one of the most graceful is Hannah Fraser:

Her hair is a Sculpture in itself and inspires me to incorporate such movement in my work.
